You and Grottini Retail Environments, what's the beginning of the story?
It's been a long and beautiful journey with the Grottini family, especially Nicola Evoli and Francesco Grottini. Two very special friends I met long back in 2004, when I was in the midst of building my new retail business format "Hobby Ideas", India's first chain of hobby and craft stores.

Fall 2004: I had successfully built the business model and was gearing to launch my new Hobby Ideas 1st store at Inorbit mall, Mumbai. The 800 square feet pilot store had been designed & developed by local architects. In October 2004 my managing director from Pidilite Industries, Mr. MB Parekh, a visionary man of impeccable taste, visited the store. The result was a Grade 1 catastrophe, like a Hurricane! I was asked to scrap the store completely and conceive an alternate project in 75 days or… forget the business! An internet search showed me the best options of international shop fittings companies for the development of a store in line with my managing director's: when choosing between Grottini and another British firm, I had no doubt. From day one, the response time of Grottini, and Nicola's driving force in terms of time lines and commitments were amazing. By December the prototype of gondolas and wall fittings were ready for inspection at Porto Recanati headquarters, where I approved it all. By mid February fittings were delivered and I opened the store on 28th February 2005, with rave reviews to the business model, concept and the sheer magnetism of the store fit out.

What's the secret of a positive partnership?
Sharing the same values, working hard together, with respect and enthusiasm. The relationship with Nicola, Francesco and the whole Grottini team has only grown stronger over the years, with Grottini doing the next 3 stores of Hobby Ideas, entering into a joint venture with Pidilite and also sharing with me their deep understanding of retail design. I have travelled a lot with them from their outsourced factories in Taiwan for shop fittings, to the Middle East conferences or to the ICSC conference in Cannes.
