Starting next month, Amazon will feature these codes, called SmileCodes, in ads in "a few" magazines, including Cosmopolitan and Seventeen. What makes them distinguishable from other QR codes is they feature Amazon's signature "smile" logo.
According to the Tech Crunch report, when shoppers line up the camera in Amazon’s app with the code, they will view a variety of campaigns. These range from opening product pages and playing videos to viewing movie trailers or product reviews.
Amazon has been testing SmileCodes in pop-up shops and Amazon Lockers in Europe over the last few weeks. Looking ahead, SmileCodes are expected to adorn the e-retailer’s delivery boxes. A move that turns an otherwise blank canvas into an engaging advertisement, the report said.
